FAQ

Coilovers:

What are the coilovers?

The term "coilover" is short for "coil spring over shock". A coilover is part of the car's suspension made up of a shock absorber inside of a coil spring. This provides dampening without torsional loads. Most of our coilovers allow adjustment of ride height and preload, using a simple threaded spring perch similar to a nut. More advanced adjustable coilover systems use a threaded shock body, along with an adjustable lower mount for ride height adjustment.

What is the difference between Standard and Extreme Low kits?

Our Standard drop on most kits is 2-3 inches. There are Extreme Low drop options that achieve an additional 20mm over that and more, depending on the vehicle. It's a combination of shorter shock and body. Please note that the Extreme Low option is not available for every model. Unfortunately we cannot provide the exact drop numbers due the large amount of wheel and tire combinations available. Please message us for more details.

What are the rear dampening extenders?

Rear dampening extenders attach to the adjustment knob for dampening on top of the coilover. They allow for easy adjustment in many cars in which the trunk liner covers the top of the coilover. You simply cut a small hole in your liner and feed the extenders through. The extenders consist of a flexible steel cable with a coating on top to prevent corrosion or scuffing of your interior.

Are the camber plates included?

No, but you can add them as an option (extra charge), where available. Due to the factory design of some vehicles' suspension, camber plates are not always available. Camber plates will generally only work on a McPherson strut design. Some car manufacturers like Lexus and Honda use A-Arm style suspension on their cars, both front and rear. This style of suspension will not support the use of a camber plate; the camber is adjustable with factory adjustments or aftermarket camber kits, if available.

Are the end-links included?

We only include the end-links if the coilover kit requires them. Most cars do not require aftermarket end-links.

Do I need to do an alignment after my coilovers were installed?

Yes, an alignment is a must-do when your ride height is adjusted. Changes to your suspension without proper alignment can make the vehicle dangerous to drive and it will also help you avoid excessive tire wear. Please allow 100-200 miles after you install your coilovers for them to fully settle. We highly recommend a professional alignment.

Do coilovers come pre-loaded out of the box?

Yes, all HIRO Performance coilovers come preloaded. Be sure to adjust your ride height properly so that you don't accidentally adjust the preload.

Do coilovers come pre-set out of the box?

No. You will need to choose your desired ride height and dampening settings.

Will my kit be able to be adjusted to factory standard ride height?

All our coilovers are made as LOWERING COILOVERS by default. In most cases, it's not always possible to achieve the standard factory ride height. We can manufacture a custom set with longer shock cartridges and lower mount in order to maintain the vehicle height as close to factory ride height as possible, upon request ONLY (exclusions apply, please contact us prior to purchase). Please keep in mind this will reduce the overall height adjustability available to the vehicle, and therefore it is not able to achieve the same lowering position as the standard default out of the box coilover kit. Please feel free to contact us prior to making an order if you would like to confirm if this option may be available to your vehicle.

Can you convert a lowering coilover to a Lift Coilover?

Yes, we do offer that option for most of our coilovers. 2-4“ lift kits are available depending on the model (extra charge will apply). Please feel free to contact us prior to making an order if you would like to confirm if this option is available to your vehicle.

Can I request custom spring rates or custom dampening?

Yes (except V-Barrel design springs). If you know the exact fitment of spring rates that you need you can send us an email with the desired choices, or just inform us in the comment box listed below during checkout. You do not need to inform us about dampening requirements as we will be able to match them with the spring rates that you have requested.

Should I order custom spring rates?

Custom springs rates should only be used when you have already experimented with our standard spring rates or if your build requires stiffer spring rates for other reasons such as certain track conditions, other supporting mods, or aggressive wheel setup in order to minimize wheel/tire clearance problems.

Will higher spring rates affect the lowering amount?

Yes. When you increase the spring rates, they can decrease the amount you can lower the vehicle. Very stiff spring rates will not compress as much from the vehicle's weight, thus resulting in less of a drop. Please consider this when selecting custom spring rates!

Can I order a single coilover or replacement parts to repair my coilovers?

Yes, we can assist with sales for complete front or rear pairs of coilovers or even a complete single coilover. We are also able to offer any single replacement part associated with your coilover kit including replacement shock cartridges beyond your warranty period.

Do your coilovers come with the bypass modules for an electronic, air or hydraulic suspension?

No, our coilovers do not come with any bypass modules. In most cases the suspension error codes can be removed with the professional/factory car manufacturer software/equipment, but we cannot guarantee that it can be 100% reprogrammed.

Are the pictures of my coilovers is for the actual set that I receive?

We use generic pictures on our website. Please contact us if you need a picture of a specific set. All pictures of the cars featured on our website have HIRO Performance coilovers installed. Actual pictures, form actual customers.
